"After watching with nervousness as Rick Santorum rattled Romney in the Midwest, many Republicans now see little chance for the insurgent former senator to stop Romney if he loses Ohio Tuesday. And from Romney boosters to neutral party officials, those Republicans are eying a moment for the seesawing race to come to a close after March 6. Leonard Curry, the chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, a state that will play an important role in the general election, told POLITICO, “I’d like it to wrap up just from a purely practical standpoint, which is financial resources. We’re spending money and the Obama team is not.”
“I think Republicans are getting tired of the process,” New York Rep. Peter King, who hasn’t endorsed a candidate but has defended Romney from Newt Gingrich attacks in the past, told POLITICO. “It’s just constant repetition.”
He added, “I think it’s gone on too long already. I think the party is beginning to coalesce behind Romney … If he wins Ohio that would go a long way toward making him the apparent nominee. If Romney can win there, that should make it pretty much over. And it’s gonna be hard for Santorum unless he really runs the table to get the kind of support and money he needs, and Gingrich, I think, is just a legend in his own mind.”
