"Comey would replace Robert Mueller, who has held the job since shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, which forced the FBI to transform itself into one of the nation’s chief weapons in the war on terror. Mueller’s last day on the job is Sept. 4.

The White House may hope that Comey’s Republican background will help him through Senate confirmation at a time when some of Obama’s nominations have been facing tough battles. But Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, indicated Comey’s confirmation hearing would raise questions about the Obama administration’s investigations of Wall Street.

Grassley said in a statement late Wednesday he had not heard from the White House about Comey’s nomination but said Comey possessed a lot of important experience on national security issues.

“But, if he’s nominated, he would have to answer questions about his recent work in the hedge fund industry,” Grassley said. “The administration’s efforts to criminally prosecute Wall Street for its part in the economic downturn have been abysmal, and his agency would have to help build the case against some of his colleagues.”

"A participant in a conference call sponsored by the Tea Party Wednesday night said the best way to get Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) to listen to her constituents on the immigration reform issue would be to "shoot her," according to ThinkProgress.

According to ThinkProgress' transcript of the exchange, the statement was met with laughs.

"I’m from Maine and our Tea Party will be meeting up next week. What is the best way that we can get our senator to listen to us?" asked a caller who identified as Bob from Maine.

"Shoot her," another unidentified caller responded to laughter.

"Yes, we will shoot her with…(inaudible) and phone calls," the moderator said."

"Officials with Minneapolis Public Schools confirm that a gun went off at a grade school in north Minneapolis on Tuesday afternoon shortly before school was dismissed, but no one was injured.

According to Rachel Hicks, director of media relations and public affairs, the shooting occurred at about 3 p.m. at Bethune Community School, located at 919 Emerson Avenue North.

Hicks said a gun in a grade school student's backpack discharged, but she said the incident occurred outside of the school building and there were not many students around at the time.

Although no injuries were reported, Hicks said some students may have seen smoke and heard the shot. No details about the weapon were provided.

Hicks told FOX 9 News staff members followed school protocol and called Minneapolis police.

Sgt. Stephen McCarty confirmed that a third-grade student had a loaded handgun in a backpack and that the gun accidentally went off while the child was outside.

The student was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital Home for Children on a health and welfare hold to figure how and where the child got the firearm.

"On one level, the visit is nothing extraordinary — a president and a governor promoting the success of their cooperation. Billions of state and federal dollars have aided the rebuilding of homes and businesses along the Jersey Shore. By most accounts, the federal agencies and their state counterparts have worked well together.%% But the Obama-Christie relationship is about so much more than that.

For the president, the post-hurricane images of his stroll with Mr. Christie were political gold. They demonstrated the president’s willingness to be bipartisan at just the right moment. They made him look presidential. And Mr. Christie’s effusive praise — he called the president’s response “wonderful,” “excellent” and “outstanding” — provided a last-minute boost.

For Mr. Christie — a tough-as-nails Republican in a union-loving, Democratic state — being seen standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Democratic president helped lift his approval ratings back into the stratosphere just before his re-election campaign this year.

After their joint appearance last fall, both men were criticized within their own parties. Some Republicans quietly attacked Mr. Christie for making life tougher on Mitt Romney, the president’s Republican rival in the 2012 election. And Mr. Obama’s praise of Mr. Christie has not helped Democrats in the state find a way to knock the governor off his pedestal.

But the benefits of the political fellowship clearly outweigh the costs.

"Faster than a slothful crosstown bus and cheaper than the subway — at least for annual members — the bike share system was greeted on Monday with a mixture of hope and trepidation. It is the crowning, valedictory piece of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s extensive investment in cycling, in which the city has added more than 350 miles of bike lanes in recent years under the stewardship of Janette Sadik-Khan, the city’s transportation commissioner.

“Are we ready?” Mr. Bloomberg asked at a news conference late Monday morning, held beside a bike station near City Hall. A chorus of bell-ringing followed.

Frais pour entrer aux États-Unis? Les états frontaliers réagissent

Des retombées économiques importantes pour plusieurs états... Devrons-nous payer pour entrer aux États-Unis?

"“They should be doing anything they can to get them down here to buy more,” he added.

That lone request sparked wide opposition among members of Congress from northern states, who vowed to stop it. A fee, they say, would hurt communities on the border that rely on people, goods and money moving between the U.S. and Canada.

“The imposition of such a toll would act as a barrier to the greater economic integration that we seek, and is the absolute last thing we should be doing to grow our economy,” stated a letter sent to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano earlier this month signed by 18 Republican and Democratic House lawmakers. Democrat U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont is sponsoring an amendment to the immigration reform bill that bars Homeland Security from conducting the study. The senator has also promised to stop any funding for the study. In the House, Democrat Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington state introduced a bill to stop the creation of a fee."

"Reagan ne survivrait pas dans le G.O.P. aujourd'hui" (Bob Dole)

Pourquoi Regan, Nixon et Dole ne s'imposeraient plus chez les républicains de nos jours? Parce qu'ils avaient des idées!

"Appearing on Fox News Sunday, the former Republican presidential candidate and Senate majority leader offered a brutal indictment of what his own party has become.

“I think they ought to put a sign on the national committee doors,” Dole said of the GOP, “that says closed for repairs until New Year’s Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas.”

"But Obama did say that even as “we turn a page” away from Iraq, and Afghanistan by the end of 2014, “let us never forget that the nation is still at war.”

He said that some troops and military families “mention to me their concern about whether the country fully appreciates” them.

Obama’s Memorial Day appearance at the venerable Arlington burial grounds came four days after he declared in a major national security address that the U.S. has taken down the al-Qaida terrorist organization, particularly in the aftermath of the killing of leader Osama bin Laden, although terrorist threats remain and the country cannot afford to let its vigilance slide.

Obama spoke on a sun-splashed morning at the amphitheater of Arlington National Cemetery after he placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. That was preceded by a playingof the National Anthem and followed by the placing of “Taps.”

In his speech, he said that Arlington “has always been home to men and women who are willing to give their all … to preserve and protect the land that we love.”

"Rodham - about the younger years of the former First Lady and senator - is due out some time around the 2016 presidential election, in which Clinton might be a canditate. It will focus on 1974, when she was a Washington lawyer.

Among those in the running to play the 26-year-old Clinton are Amanda Seyfried, who starred in Les Misérables, Zero Dark Thirty's Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, and Scarlett Johansson, most recently seen playing Janet Leigh in Hitchcock.

Rodham director James Ponstoldt said: “They’re all wonderful actresses. We’re very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We’re in an enviable position.”

“Regardless of people’s political affiliation or how they feel about Hillary Clinton, you don’t find people who question the quality of her intelligence or her drive. I want a wonderful actress who could embody that.”

Obamacare, catastrophe appréhendée? Non.

"Still, here’s what it seems is about to happen: millions of Americans will suddenly gain health coverage, and millions more will feel much more secure knowing that such coverage is available if they lose their jobs or suffer other misfortunes. Only a relative handful of people will be hurt at all. And as contrasts emerge between the experience of states like California that are making the most of the new policy and that of states like Texas whose politicians are doing their best to undermine it, the sheer meanspiritedness of the Obamacare opponents will become ever more obvious.

So yes, it does look as if there’s an Obamacare shock coming: the shock of learning that a public program designed to help a lot of people can, strange to say, end up helping a lot of people — especially when government officials actually try to make it work.

France et mariage gai: manifestations (New York Times)

"The antigay marriage march occurred as a recent poll shows many French are losing patience with the protests against the “marriage for all” law that passed May 18. The demonstrations have broadened to include those angry at the president for his overall leadership and some far-right protesters who have been violent.

Marchers converged from three parts of Paris to the esplanade in front of the Invalides. There was a separate, smaller march by conservative Christians.

In general, the demonstrations against the law have included a combination of religious leaders and their followers, opposed to gay marriage on religious grounds, and more conservative French, many of them Roman Catholic, who believe that gay couples should have equal rights, but within an institution other than marriage. Many also object to the new ability of gay married couples to adopt children, arguing that a child should be raised by a man and a woman."

"While it was far from clear that Mr. Obama’s aim to shutter the prison — which he tried but failed to close in his first term — would be achieved anytime soon, he also began a renewed push to winnow down the 166-inmate population.

Transfers of low-level detainees dried up after Congress imposed steep restrictions in January 2011, and the administration has to date not used its ability to issue case-by-case waivers to those restrictions. That has stranded 86 detainees who have been approved for transfer if security conditions could be met.

Of those, 56 are from Yemen, where Mr. Obama had forbidden transfers after a branch of Al Qaeda based in Yemen tried to bomb a Detroit-bound airliner on Dec. 25, 2009. In his national security address, Mr. Obama said it was now time to allow transfers to Yemen on a case-by-case basis.

"Declaring that “America is at a crossroads,” the president called for redefining what has been a global war into a more targeted assault on terrorist groups threatening the United States. As part of a realignment of counterterrorism policy, he said he would curtail the use of drones, recommit to closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and seek new limits on his own war power.

In a much-anticipated speech at the National Defense University, Mr. Obama sought to turn the page on the era that began on Sept. 11, 2001, when the imperative of preventing terrorist attacks became both the priority and the preoccupation. Instead, the president suggested that the United States had returned to the state of affairs that existed before Al Qaeda toppled the World Trade Center, when terrorism was a persistent but not existential danger. With Al Qaeda’s core now “on the path to defeat,” he argued, the nation must adapt.

"An FBI agent fatally shot Todashev in Orlando as authorities investigated whether Todashev was connected to the Boston Marathon bombings, a U.S. law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the Boston case told CNN.

Todashev, 27, also knew Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is also a suspect in the April 15 bombings, the official said. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, injured and captured after a manhunt, is being held by authorities. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his older brother, was killed in a shootout with police shortly after the bombings.

The agent shot in self-defense in the incident, which occurred at Todashev's house, the law enforcement source said. Todashev was from the Chechnya region, as were the Tsarnaev brothers, the source said.
