'The Alamo will not fall under United Nations control if it is named a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Texas Land commission assured Texans on Wednesday, according to the San Antonio Express-News. In a statement Wednesday Jerry Patterson, the Texas land commissioner, called rumors that the U.N. might manage the Alamo and other Spanish missions in Texas "horse hockey." "The people of Texas own the Alamo now and in the future. Nothing is going to change that," Patterson said at a gun rights rally at the Alamo on Oct. 19.'

'At, 11:35 p.m., the company that will providing the Red Sox's rides for the parade had the answer ready: Saturday. Boston Duck Tours, the company which runs the famous Boston "duck boats" broke the news of the parade, which traditionally utilize the city's unique amphibious tour vehicles for championship parades, on its official Twitter account.'

'Lately, it really has seemed as if the Obama White House is incapable of producing good news beyond the fact that the debt ceiling wasn’t smashed. Swooning websites, security snoops run amok — there’d be some comfort in believing that it’s all historically inevitable. “In almost every case, you can argue that the second terms have been pretty dreadful,” said Michael Beschloss, the presidential historian.

Think about it. Richard Nixon had to resign. Bill Clinton got impeached. George W. Bush had an average second-term approval rating of 37 percent, which the Gallup people say was the worst presidential plummet in modern history.

Woodrow Wilson had a stroke and spent much of his second term in the bedroom. Franklin Roosevelt was one of the country’s most successful presidents, but that was because of Terms 1 and 3. Two was a mess.

In fact, the pattern goes all the way back to George Washington. “Certainly, from his point of view, it was horrible,” said Joseph Ellis, who has written biographies of both Washington and Thomas Jefferson. One of the reasons was the eruption of a hyperpartisan media. When Washington retired, Ellis noted, one Jefferson-backed paper announced: “We can all pray for his imminent death.”

Every little thing is gonna be alright: les Red Sox un modèle enviable (NY Times)

At Fenway Park, the fans sing their outlook: Every little thing gonna be all right.

It is more than the at-bat anthem for Shane Victorino, the sprightly right fielder who drove in four runs Wednesday. After decades of well-founded fatalism, it is now a way of life.

With a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the World Series, the Red Sox won their first title at home in 95 years. After championships on the road in 2004 and 2007, it was bound to happen, sooner or later.

“People call this the cathedral of baseball, and I absolutely, 100 percent agree; this place is a special place to play,” Victorino said. “It’s been great. It’s been fun. We all understand the magnitude of tonight’s game, the fact that since we haven’t won a championship in Fenway since 1918.”

"Whites tend to hold negative views of Obamacare, while blacks tend to like it. Specifically, 55 percent of whites, an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found this year, consider Mr. Obama’s health care law a bad idea, while 59 percent of blacks call it a good idea. On immigration, 51 percent of whites oppose legal status for illegal residents, but 63 percent of blacks and 76 percent of Hispanics favor it.

The statistics mirror the core philosophical division in Washington’s fierce battles over taxes, spending and debt. Whites say government does too much, while blacks and Hispanics say it should do more to meet people’s needs.

"“In the scholarly world, cognitive sciences has everybody’s ear right now, and everybody is thinking about how to relate to it,” said Louis Menand, a Harvard history professor. “How many people do you know who’ve read a book by an English professor in the past year? But everybody’s reading science books.”

Many distinguished humanities professors feel their status deflating. Anthony Grafton, a Princeton history professor who started that university’s humanities recruiting program, said he sometimes feels “like a newspaper comic strip character whose face is getting smaller and smaller.”"

"Instead, Silva found himself standing next to the newly-minted World Series MVP, not to mention the Sox' unofficial team captain, spokesman, grief counselor, chaplain, grillmaster and cheerleader. Silva practically turned into an 8-year-old himself shaking hands and congratulating Ortiz. "He represents everything Boston is about," said Chief Silva. "Hard-working people who look out for one another. The way he handled everything from the bombing to the whole season tells you how much he cares. The epitome of leadership is when people look to you in time of trouble and you want to be the one to provide the help. That's what people see in David: a true leader."

Red Sox de Boston champions 2013!

"From worst to first"...

"The worst-to-first transformation is complete. In a stunning season's turnaround, the Red Sox went from rebuilding mode to the top of the heap as they turned aside the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-1, last night at Fenway Park to earn their third World Series title in the last decade. John Lackey pitched into the seventh inning and Shane Victorino sparked an early offensive onslaught with a bases-clearing double in the third inning. Fittingly, closer Koji Uehara pitched the ninth inning, retiring Matt Carpenter for the final out and sending Fenway into pandemonium."

"The director of the National Security Agency on Tuesday dismissed as “completely false” reports that his agency swept up millions of phone records of European citizens, and he revealed that data collected by NATO allies were shared with the United States.

Gen. Keith Alexander said foreign intelligence services collected phone records in war zones and other areas outside their borders and provided them to the spy agency — an operation that was misunderstood by French and Spanish newspapers that reported that the NSA was conducting surveillance in their countries.

"But only reparations can reverse the long-term harm. As Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, said, “We have to have appropriate recompense.”

The claim is not, however, about compensating individuals, but their communities. And in this way, since most countries in the Caribbean are financially in debt to international banks, Caricom is making a provocative argument: It is actually Europe that owes the Caribbean.

This is more than just creative accounting. When economists debate why some countries are poor and others are rich, they often focus on the cultural, political or economic structures of poor countries. But historians of the Caribbean have long argued that national inequality is a direct result of centuries of economic exploitation.

The foundations for this argument go back to a 1944 book by the Trinidadian historian Eric Williams, “Capitalism and Slavery.” Mr. Williams had to pay $500 to help subsidize its publication by the University of North Carolina Press, but the book became a classic, and he later became his country’s prime minister.

His argument, that the profits from the slave trade and slavery were the foundation for Britain’s Industrial Revolution, spurred decades of debate and research, and today there are hundreds of books documenting slavery’s profound impact on the modern world."

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/29/opinion/international/confronting-the-legacies-of-slavery.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20131029&_r=0

Forest Whitaker incarnera Colin Powell à l'écran

Qu'en pense le général?

"Well, I have no comment because you are hearing about it at the same time I'm hearing about it. Not because anybody called me. I saw it in Google alerts. So we will wait to see what the project is all about. I expect I will have to call both the script writer and Forest to see what they are really planning to do. Yes, yes. Forest is a marvelous actor, but so is Denzel. Unfortunately, nobody asked me to play me!"

"Allen Wayne Densen Morgan, a 29-year-old veteran from Munford, Ala. entered a guilty plea in federal court Thursday for attempting to hire Ku Klux Klansmen to murder his neighbor. According to court documents, Morgan told an undercover FBI agent he wanted to see his neighbor "hung from a tree like he is an animal" and "his dick cut off" over accusations that the man, a convicted sex offender, had raped his wife.

An affidavit given by FBI Special Agent Cornelius Harris Jr. in support of a criminal complaint filed Aug. 26 explains that Morgan believed his neighbor, Clifford Maurice Mosley, raped his wife earlier that month. Records show that Mosley, who is African American, was arrested in 2008 for sexual abuse, a fact Morgan was aware of. Harris wrote that Morgan told an undercover FBI agent he responded to the alleged rape by attempting to "force a confrontation" with Mosley on Aug. 22 by firing "multiple rounds of ammunition" at Mosley on the street outside their homes.

"Mosley fled on foot as Morgan fired several shots in the ground beside him in an effort to intimidate him," explained Harris.

"Morgan assessed that Mosley must be guilty of the rape of his wife because Mosley never tried to defend himself by standing his ground or offering to reason with Morgan."

"Despite repeatedly denouncing the CIA’s drone campaign, top officials in Pakistan’s government have for years secretly endorsed the program and routinely received classified briefings on strikes and casualty counts, according to top-secret CIA documents and Pakistani diplomatic memos obtained by The Washington Post.

The files describe dozens of drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal region and include maps as well as before-and-after aerial photos of targeted compounds over a four-year stretch from late 2007 to late 2011 in which the campaign intensified dramatically.

"It was the second time in three days that allegations of American government surveillance threatened to cloud relations between Washington and close European allies. The consternation in Berlin followed a furor in France over reports in the newspaper Le Monde that American intelligence had collected data on 70 million communications by French citizens in a 30-day period late last year and into January.

The White House issued a statement confirming that Mr. Obama and Ms. Merkel had spoken “regarding allegations that the U.S. National Security Agency intercepted the communications of the German Chancellor.
