Déjà ces jeux prenaient une tournure symbolique avec le rapprochement des deux Corées et la réaction d'un patineur à l'homophobie alléguée du Vice-Président Mike Pence. Nous ajoutons un nouveau chapitre avec ce baiser de l'athlète de slopestyle Gus Kenworthy. Après avoir remporté l'argent à Sotchi l'athlète américain n'avait pas osé étreindre son partenaire. Cette fois il l'a repéré dans la foule et le baiser a été capturé par les caméras de télévision et de nombreux photographes. Si ses performances sur les pentes ont été moins fructueuses qu'à Sotchi, il considère avoir contribué d'une autre manière en luttant contre l'homophobie.
"I think that's amazing. That's what I wanted to do at the last Olympics, to share a kiss with my boyfriend at the bottom.
"To be able to do that, to give him a kiss, to have that affection broadcasted for the world is incredible.
"The only way to really change perceptions, break down homophobia, break down barriers is through representation and that's definitely not something I had as a kid."
